Baton Rouge wins statewide Cleanest City award

Red Stick named cleanest Louisiana city over 100,000


Officials from the Louisiana Garden Club Federation announced today that Baton Rouge has won top honors in its 2014 Cleanest City contest for cities with populations over 100,000.

This is the 56th year that the Louisiana Garden Club Federation has held the Cleanest City Awards, which encourage Louisiana communities to become more proactive in the war against litter.

During the competition, judges toured parts of Baton Rouge to assess the cleanliness of residential yards, businesses, streets and sidewalks, parks, schools, cemeteries, municipal and other buildings.

Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden applauded the award announcement, noting that a clean city is essential for the economic growth and the well being of Baton Rouge’s citizens. The Mayor said the City-Parish Department of Public Works, Baton Rouge Garden Club, and others who were involved in helping clean the City deserve credit for Baton Rouge’s success in this year’s Cleanest City Contest.

Finishing second behind Baton Rouge in this year’s competition for the state’s largest cities was Lafayette, followed by New Orleans and Metairie.

Baton Rouge qualified for the statewide competition by winning the Cleanest City Award in the Louisiana Garden Club Federation’s local district that stretches from Slidell to Port Allen.

The goal of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation’s Cleanest City Contest is to raise public awareness about the need to have a clean community and to encourage city governments, businesses, organizations and private citizens to work towards that end.
