City-Parish officials announced this morning that debris removal operations related to the August 2016 flooding are set to conclude Tuesday, Feb. 7 as crews work to complete their final collection pass, which began Nov. 7. This deadline corresponds to FEMA’s deadline for debris removal activities eligible for federal reimbursement, which is 180 days after the disaster event. Residents who live in the City of Baton Rouge and unincorporated areas of East Baton Rouge Parish and are still in need of flood debris removal services must move any such debris curbside by Monday, Jan. 16 for crews to collect it as debris removal teams make their final progression through these impacted areas.

Once debris is placed curbside, officials are strongly urging residents to immediately report the location of their debris by going online to http://gis.brla.gov/reportdebris or by calling the EBR debris removal hotline at 1-888-721-4372. This will help to ensure debris removal teams have a record of residents’ locations where flood debris still needs to be collected.

If debris is not placed curbside and reported to the City-Parish through the online web form or hotline number by Monday, Jan. 16, there is no guarantee it will be collected during this last phase of the EBR debris removal program.

As a reminder, construction and reconstruction waste materials are not eligible for FEMA reimbursement and thus will not be collected by City-Parish debris removal crews. The disposal of any such materials is the responsibility of the homeowner and/or contractor. Residents who are initiating new construction or reconstruction efforts should use licensed contractors to perform this work and secure in writing how the contractor plans to dispose of any construction or reconstruction materials. To locate a licensed contractor, residents can go online to the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) website, www.lslbc.louisiana.gov, and click the “Contractor Search” button.

Once debris removal operations have concluded, residents will be responsible for bringing any remaining flood-related debris to the North Landfill, located at 16001 Samuels Road, or placing smaller debris items into garbage carts for normal residential garbage collection.

Since debris removal efforts began Aug. 20, more than 1.78 million cubic yards of flood debris has been collected as part of the City-Parish’s flood recovery process, representing one of the largest flood debris removal efforts in U.S. history.

For more information on debris collected during current and previous phases, and to track the progress of the remainder of the debris removal effort, visit http://gis.brla.gov/debris.
