International Water, Sewer experts tour South Wastewater Plant

Some 80 water and wastewater professionals from across the United States, and as far away as Japan, Brazil, and Denmark, got a firsthand look at the City-Parish’s recently upgraded South Wastewater Treatment Plant on Sept. 30.

The tour was part of the Water Environment Federation’s Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC), the largest conference of its kind in North America that was held this year in New Orleans from Sept. 27 through Oct. 1. The annual conference offers water quality professionals from around the world the best water quality education and training available today

The conference took a day-trip on Sept. 30 to Baton Rouge for the tour, which was hosted by Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden, City-Parish Department of Public Works, program manager CH2M HILL, construction contractor Brasfield & Gorrie and the host of engineers and equipment manufacturers who were involved in the project.

The WEFTEC 2014 tour was an opportunity to showcase the City-Parish’s investment of over $250 million in state-of-the art facility upgrades to the plant as part of the Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Control and Wastewater Facilities Program. Constructed in three phases, the improvements will accommodate future flows, allow the consolidation and closure of the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant, improve environmental compliance, and upgrade treatment technologies and efficiencies.
