Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome announced today that the Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (MOHSEP) has been activated in light of the wintry weather conditions in the Baton Rouge Area.
MOHSEP personnel along with law enforcement and emergency response officials will be monitoring the conditions closely during the duration of this weather event to ensure the safety of all citizens.
“Right now, we’re telling residents to stay off the roads,” Mayor Broome said during a news conference. “Anyone who must drive is urged to use extreme caution.”
City-Parish employees were dismissed early in light of expected icy conditions on the roadway. The Mayor is asking residents to take the necessary steps to protect their family and neighbors as well as pets and pipes.
The Mayor has also been in touch with the Governor’s office, the Department of Transportation and Development, elected officials and volunteer organizations to help coordinate efforts if the need arises. Additionally, the Department of Public Works has trucks loaded with sand on standby.
