Annual EduFest slated today to ‘reframe readiness’ for school year

Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden and his community partners will hold the 2nd annual EduFest program to help prepare kids for the coming school year today from 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. The media is invited to cover the event, which will be held at the Family and Youth Service Center, 1120 Government Street.

Edufest is part of President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative to address problems faced by boys of color

“One of the outcomes of EduFest is to reframe readiness for school beyond school supplies and uniforms to include proper eating, rest, exercise, studying aids, and health screenings for kids as they begin the next school year,” Mayor Holden said.

In accepting the President’s My Brother’s Keeper Challenge last year, Mayor Holden committed to concentrate on two main areas:
• Ensuring that all children start school socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically ready.
• Ensuring that all children area able to read at grade-level by the Third Grade.

Summer camps from across East Baton Rouge Parish will participate in the free event, which this year will feature the theme, “Safari Adventure.” Each participating child will receive a passport that will be stamped as they move through stations to receive information or to engage in hands-on activities. Participants who complete all the required stations will receive a prize.
