BATON ROUGE -- The National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans/Baton Rouge Office will be observing Louisiana Severe Weather Awareness Week during this week of March 6 – 10, 2017. The goal of Louisiana Severe Weather Awareness Week is to call attention to the threats posed by weather hazards and to review severe weather safety tips.

According to the NWS, late winter and spring usually bring the greatest chance of severe weather events in Louisiana. Mayor Broome reminds everyone to stay cognizant of the current weather situation as we remember how our community was greatly impacted by the Historic August 2016 Flooding.

As part of Louisiana Severe Weather Awareness Week, the NWS will transmit a Tornado Test Message on NOAA Weather Radio Wednesday, March 8 at 9:15 a.m. The test message will be similar to the Routine Weekly Test message transmitted each Wednesday. Some NOAA Weather Radios will alarm with the test message, others will only have a TEST message displayed on their LCD screens. The test message will allow citizens’ to ensure their NOAA Weather Radios are in working order. In the event of severe weather the test will be postponed to a later date.

Mayor Broome urges citizens to remain Red Stick Ready by reviewing their family disaster plans and stocking their supply kits this week.
