East Baton Rouge Parish EMS receives accolades from American Heart Association, international organization

BATON ROUGE, La. —East Baton Rouge Parish Emergency Medical Services was recently honored by the American Heart Association and the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International for exemplary service.

“I am extremely proud of our EMS professionals here in East Baton Rouge Parish,” said Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome. “These men and women selflessly provide optimum care for the citizens of this community, who are sometimes in the worst conditions of their lives. Our EMS team fully deserves accolades for all that they do.”

East Baton Rouge Parish EMS received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS Gold Plus Award for implementing quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience severe heart attacks.

According to the association, every year, more than 250,000 people experience an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) the deadliest type of heart attack caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it’s critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by mechanically opening the blocked vessel or by providing clot-busting medication.

The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International announced that East Baton Rouge Parish EMS is its “Team of the Year,” as part of the 2017 Public Safety Communications Awards and Technology Leadership Awards. According to the organization, the East Baton Rouge Parish team, along with other winners in separate categories, demonstrated the highest levels of professional conduct and outstanding performance in the line of duty. This year, APCO received more than 275 nominations from across the country.

Award recipients will be recognized during the Opening General Session at APCO 2017, APCO’s Annual Conference and Expo taking place August 13-16 in Denver, Colo.

According to the APCO International website, it “is the world’s oldest and largest organization of public safety communications professionals, and supports the largest U.S. membership base of any public safety association. It serves the needs of public safety communications practitioners worldwide — and the welfare of the general public as a whole — by providing complete expertise, professional development, technical assistance, advocacy and outreach.” APCO is based in Daytona Beach, Fla.
