MAYOR HOLDEN RECEIVES NATIONAL EDUCATION APPOINTMENT, HONORED BY RETIRED TEACHERS

Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) Youth, Education and Families Council, which guides the work of NLC in providing a national resource for municipalities seeking assistance in education, youth development, early childhood development, safety of children and youth and family economic success in communities. Holden’s appointment by NLC President, Mayor Anthony Williams of Washington, D.C., follows a visit to Baton Rouge by NLC Executive Director Don Borut to participate in Holden’s Green Light Citizens Council meetings.

Last week, Holden also received the 2005 “History Maker in the Making” Award from the Educators of Yesteryear Unit of the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association.

During Holden’s campaign for Mayor, he made education a priority and his transition team has urged him to use the Mayor’s office to provide leadership in this critical area.
