GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of an employee of a higher classification, performs work at the beginning training level in instrumentation activities at sewage pumping and treatment facilities. Work involves structured training in inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on electronic and pneumatic control systems. Assignments are given orally or in writing. An employee of this class may be on twenty-four-hour call. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Receives training in inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing electronic and pneumatic control systems.
Assists with reading and interpreting blueprints, technical repair manuals, operating guides, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
Learns various programming languages necessary for utilizing the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, including programmable logic controllers.
Assists with troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining computerized process alarm systems.
Assists with testing instruments and control panel wiring that have been installed, repaired, or replaced to ensure conformance to standard specifications.
Assists with calibrating instruments according to established standards.
Assists with maintaining records, parts inventory, and equipment information.
Attends training schools as required.
Utilizes and maintains various hand and power tools.
Utilizes test equipment such as multimeters, digital voltmeters, digital calibrators, digital logic probes, oscilloscopes, frequency measuring meters, and other pertinent electrical and electronic measuring devices.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the electrical, electronic, mechanical, and pneumatic principles governing the functioning of control systems and instruments.
Knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used to test, maintain, and repair control systems and instruments in accordance with prescribed standards.
Skill in the use of tools and precision instruments necessary to perform assigned tasks.
Ability to receive training from a technical supervisor.
Ability to learn the instrumentation activities at sewage pumping and treatment facilities.
Ability to learn the occupational hazards and safety precautions of sewage pumping and treatment facilities.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to climb and descend ladders and stairs.
Ability to participate in a standby schedule.
Ability to work after scheduled hours and during emergency situations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and completion of vocational school in the field of electrical, electronic, pneumatic, or mechanical control instruments and systems.
SUBSTITUTIONS
One year of experience in a related area may substitute for completion of vocational school; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS

Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
