GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of an EMT Paramedic or EMS Shift Supervisor, performs responsible paraprofessional medical work in both the emergency and routine treatment of sickness and accident victims. Work is usually performed under extreme pressure and duress. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Administers advanced first aid and treatment to sick or injured patients at the scene of the injury or en route to hospital as needed. Administers advanced life support according to department protocols, procedures, and Louisiana Scope of Practice for Advanced EMTs. Drives an emergency vehicle as required; conducts emergency vehicle equipment inventory and maintenance. Determines the nature and extent of the illness or injury to establish procedures to be followed or the need for additional assistance. Recognizes and interprets vital signs and reports them accurately to a physician to enable the physician to make medical judgments. Administers prescribed treatments such as splinting, administration of medications, intravenous infusions, treatment of traumatic injuries, and other advanced life support skills as determined by protocol and scope of practice. Extricates accident victims from damaged motor vehicles.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of paraprofessional emergency medical practices and techniques of the basic and advanced life support level. Knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with emergency medical work. Ability to remain calm, tactful, and professional while dealing with injured or sick patients and their families. Ability to identify emergency medical situations and administer appropriate first aid treatment in order to stabilize the patient's condition. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written medical instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and medical staff. Ability to obtain Louisiana Commercial driver's license if necessary. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, supplemented by completion of an approved Advanced Emergency Medical Technician course, or completed the Louisiana approved transition process from EMT Intermediate to an Advanced EMT.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Registration as an Emergency Medical Technician Advanced by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and certification by Louisiana Department of Health, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
