GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of an employee of a higher classification, performs responsible work in providing technical assistance of various kinds to the general public in social service programs. Work also involves disseminating information on available social services, completing eligibility applications, determining applicants' eligibility and participating in outreach programs. Work is performed with independent judgment and interpretation of policies and regulations based on knowledge gained through experience. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Interviews applicants to determine initial and on-going eligibility for various economic assistance programs and completes the necessary forms. Explains and interprets polices and programs, rights and responsibilities to clients; works closely with community resources, both public and private in order to make referrals to social services or other agencies as needed. Verifies and evaluates data, determines eligibility of applicants in a timely manner, using applicable agency policies and procedures and sends appropriate notifications. Enters and retrieves data in the computer system for use in completion of applications; answers telephones and walk- in inquires from clients and other agencies. Maintains knowledge of current policies, laws, trends, and developments in the field by attending training sessions, meetings and conferences; performs similar or related duties as required or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the types of social services offered by governmental agencies and of procedures used in obtaining such services. Knowledge of record keeping procedures and techniques and methods used to prepare routine forms and reports. Knowledge of basic mathematics used to make computations for completion of forms and reports. Ability to communicate and establish rapport and interact effectively with economically disadvantaged individuals. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others including community partners, community service agencies, co-workers, and the general public. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree.
