GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of an employee of a higher classification, performs work at the beginning training level in the maintenance and repair of equipment at sewage pumping, storage, and treatment facilities and storm water pumping stations. Work involves structured training in maintenance and repair of pumps, gearboxes, bar screens, basins, motors, blowers, compressors, drive shafts, etc. May also receive training in machinist work. Assignments are given orally or in writing. An employee of this class may be on twenty-four-hour call. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Assists with maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment at sewage pumping, storage, and treatment facilities and storm water pumping stations that includes pumps, gearboxes, bar screens, basins, motors, blowers, compressors, drive shafts, etc. Assists with maintaining and repairing various types of pumps: grit/grit classifier, plunger, sump, sludge/scum, primary plant effluent, and recirculation. Assists with installing, removing, and repacking pumps. Assists with rebuilding return activated sludge pumps. Assists with replacing defective fuses, wiring, starters, elements, and coils. Assists with lubricating bearings, pumps, and motors. Assists with light electrical work, including disconnecting electric motors and checking voltage and amps. Assists with performing various machinist work. Utilizes and maintains various hand and power tools. May operate and maintain a light automotive vehicle and/or a forklift.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of principles and practices of machines and motors. Knowledge of basic principles and practices of the electrical trade. Skill in the safe operation of a variety of hand and power tools. Ability to receive training from a technical supervisor. Ability to learn the mechanical maintenance activities at sewage pumping, storage, and treatment facilities and storm water pumping stations. Ability to learn how to maintain and repair pumps and other mechanical equipment at sewage pumping, storage, and treatment facilities and storm water pumping stations. Ability to learn pipefitting and the use of hydraulics. Ability to learn the occupational hazards and safety precautions of sewage pumping, storage, and treatment facilities and storm water pumping stations. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to work with close tolerances. Ability to climb and descend ladders and stairs. Ability to participate in a standby schedule. Ability to work after scheduled hours and during emergency situations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and completion of vocational school in a mechanical related field.

SUBSTITUTIONS
One year of experience in a related area may substitute for completion of vocational school; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license or a valid Louisiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A, B, or C with appropriate endorsements. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
