GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the EMS Vehicle & Maintenance Manager, performs administrative and technical work related to all aspects of the specialized Emergency Medical Services (EMS) fleet. Work involves assisting with the daily operations of the EMS fleet, coordinating with operations support to distribute specialized emergency medical equipment, and developing and implementing a comprehensive driving program within the department. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Assists management in updating, monitoring, and implementing a preventive maintenance program to ensure that proper procedures are followed, maximizing the lifespan of medical vehicles and medical equipment.
Assists management in identifying medical vehicle replacement and resolving service and maintenance issues.
Installs, tests, and maintains complex emergency equipment unique to EMS vehicles.
Consults with vendors of specialized EMS vehicles to ensure repairs and training meet specific operational needs.
Moves EMS vehicles and equipment as necessary for repair, maintenance, and deployment, including post-accident medical equipment inspections.
Develops and implements a comprehensive driving program within the department to include the initial Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) for new employees, annual in-service training, and remediation; monitors continuously the driving program to ensure national standards for EVOC operators are met.
Utilizes drive-cam technology to evaluate and monitor safety concerns that need to be addressed,
Educates new employees on vehicle inspection and equipment usage during orientation; performs coaching sessions and corrective action training.
Assists with evaluating and determining the cause of action for all accidents and submits findings to the Accident Review Board; performs drive remediation after an accident or incident.
Reviews departmental driving policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and that they address the current needs of the department.
Restocks and monitors the medical supplies needed on medical units.
Possesses the capability to function as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the operating characteristics of emergency vehicles and medical equipment.
Ability to troubleshoot and correct minor maintenance and repair issues.
Ability to direct the preparation and maintenance of repair records and reports.
Ability to analyze and evaluate records for planning purposes.
Ability to maintain equipment servicing schedules, records, and reports.
Ability to instruct others, orally and in writing, on mechanical concepts.
Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability preciseness, and dependability to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency and two years of experience in the emergency response field.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Registration as an Emergency Medical Technician Basic by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and certification by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. Must have a valid driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.
