GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs skilled work at the Master Technician level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel powered automotive and related equipment. Work involves the performance of skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, motor graders, bulldozers, mowers, ATV's, tractors, and other standard and specialized equipment. Assignments are received in the form of repair orders and verbal instructions. Employees of this classification are distinguished from the Automotive Mechanic and Senior Automotive Mechanic classification by a greater level of experience and authority. Employees of this class work under general supervision, using independent judgment as to method of repair. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Performs complete overhaul and repair work in different types of gasoline, alternative fuel and diesel automotive equipment, ranging from lawn mowers to large bulldozers. Repairs, rebuilds, and overhauls transmissions, differentials, including front and rear end assemblies. Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts, valves, pistons, piston rings, brakes, main bearing assemblies, cooling, ignition and fuel systems. Repairs and overhauls engines, alternators, carburetors, clutches; replaces blades, axles, and springs. Repairs and overhauls air compressors, hydraulic systems, air-conditioning systems and other specialized related equipment. Road tests equipment to locate defects and to check repair work. Does minor and major electrical work on automotive equipment, such as installing batteries, repairing and adjusting lights, replacing alternators and starters and tracing electrical shorts; repairs automotive computer and electronic control systems, including electronic carburetors and fuel injection. Inspects City-Parish vehicles, and taxicabs in East Baton Rouge Parish for state safety inspection; issues inspection permits. Occasionally does minor body repair work on automotive or heavy equipment. Makes road calls, repairs vehicles when possible; maintains and repairs road service truck and auxiliary equipment; may operate equipment, change tires and make service calls. Acts as a team leader on major overhauls and repairs of fleet equipment. Attends training courses in-house and factory to maintain certification level.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair of light and heavy duty automotive equipment. Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel engines, and of mechanical repair of heavy duty trucks and construction equipment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Skill in the use and the operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work. Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment, and to apply approved techniques in remedying defects. Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific problems. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to interpret and work from sketches, and pencil diagrams. Ability to provide input on vehicle and equipment specifications for replacement units and for the improvement of the fleet. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency and four years of journeyman level experience as an automotive mechanic (4 years journeyman level = 6 years of experience).

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS

Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification. Position(s) of this classification may require possession of a Louisiana Commercial Driver's license (CDL) Class A, B, or C (with appropriate endorsements) at the time of application, upon the date of appointment, or within the six-month probationary period. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
