GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of a higher classification, performs skilled work in the production of street signs, markers, and graphic signs using computerized equipment, a variety of hand tools, and other equipment. Assignments are received with instructions on number, type, and layout of signs and materials and processes to be used. Work is inspected by a supervisor for quality and conformance to established standards and specifications. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Locates files for specific types of signs from a database library and loads into a computer; selects signs, types, colors, texts, etc., of signs based on work orders. Enters data into a computer, using an input device such as mouse or keyboard; reviews layout on screen and alters illustration. Loads cutter/plotter with appropriate sheeting material; cuts or trims outline of signs on sheeting materials and positions on sign blanks. Assists in the maintenance of equipment and receiving and shipping sign fabrication material and completed signs. May perform dispatcher duties. Operates lifts and equipment. May occasionally serve as a Flagger.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the uniform standards governing the fabrication of traffic control signs as set forth in the "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices" and "Standard Highway Signs Manual" published by the Federal Highway Administration. Knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in the production of signs. Skill in the use of the hand tools, computerized equipment, computer aided graphic and design software, and other equipment used in the production of signs. Ability to design signs. Ability to detect incorrect spelling. Ability to interpret and work from sketches, rough layouts, standard drawings, and specifications. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and completion of one course in computer aided design or one year of experience in sign design/fabrication.

SUBSTITUTIONS
One year experience in computer aided design will substitute for one year experience in sign design/fabrication. Any equivalent combination of education and experience. (Please click here for the Substitution Equivalency Guide)
