Under the close supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs semiskilled maintenance and repair work assisting skilled workers in a variety of building trades for the City-Parish. Work involves performing routine, physical labor in helping install, maintain and repair City-Parish building structures and mechanical and electrical equipment. Incumbent's work may be concentrated in one area or divided among several areas according to the needs of the department/division. The work of employees does not require a high degree of skill and work is evaluated daily for quality and quantity of completed assignments. Employees may be required to work shift work. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Performs semiskilled maintenance and repair work assisting skilled workers in one or more of the building trades; may specialize in a particular trade such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, plastering, electrical work, heating and ventilating work, masonry, cement finishing, concrete and ductile iron pipe work, etc. Performs minor repairs to City-Parish buildings and homes of social service program clients; participates in preventive maintenance. Measures and cuts lumber, paneling, carpet, ceiling tile, etc.; smoothes and sands surfaces to remove ridges, tool marks, glue or caulking; hangs doors, paints and performs other miscellaneous semiskilled duties for a skilled carpenter. Measures, cuts and bends wire and conduit; mounts conduits and electrical fixtures; replaces burned out fuses and light bulbs; retrieves tools for a skilled electrician. Assists in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning and heating equipment on a small scale. Assists in repairing and replacing plumbing fixtures and equipment; locates leaking or broken pipes; cuts or drills holes in walls or floors to accommodate the passage of pipes. Lifts and moves heavy equipment, materials or tools; operates power tools under the direction of skilled workers. Cleans and helps recondition old tools and mechanical equipment. Operates City-Parish vehicles.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the tools and equipment commonly used in the construction, mechanical and electrical trades. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in the construction, mechanical and electrical trades. Skill in the use of construction, repair, and maintenance of hand and power tools. Skill in the operation of light motor vehicles. Ability to understand and follow simple written and oral instructions in order to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with coworkers, superiors, and others. Ability to physically perform assigned tasks. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and six months of experience in one of the building trades.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position. Position(s) of this classification may require possession of the appropriate Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) refrigerant recycling and recovery certification (Type I, II, III or Universal) for technicians (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990).
OTHER JOB ASPECTS
For security reasons, as per TSA provision 1542; all applicant/employees of the Greater Baton Rouge Airport District who have access to restricted areas will be required to have a ten (10) year criminal background check to the extent allowable by the law.
