GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs semiskilled maintenance and repair work in a variety of building trades for the City-Parish. Work involves assisting a skilled worker and performing a variety of semiskilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of City-Parish building structures and mechanical and electrical equipment. Incumbent's work may be concentrated in one area or divided among several areas according to the needs of the department/division. An employee in this class is required to have attained a sufficient degree of skill to do general maintenance and repair work. Employees of this class work independently under a skilled superior who evaluates work daily for quality and quantity of completed assignments. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Performs semiskilled maintenance work in a variety of building trades; may specialize in a particular trade such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, plastering, electrical work, heating and ventilating work, masonry, carpeting, cement finishing, concrete and ductile iron pipe work, etc. Maintains and repairs City-Parish buildings and homes of social service program clients; participates in preventive maintenance. Repairs window panes and screens; repairs leaky roofs and damaged flooring; applies paints, lacquers, varnishes, sealers, bleaches, fillers, and stains to interior and exterior buildings and furniture; lays carpet and performs other miscellaneous semiskilled duties for a skilled carpenter. Performs simple installations of electrical equipment; repairs electrical appliances, electric gates, climate control systems, food service equipment, and small motor devices. Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of air conditioning and heating equipment on both a large and small scale; cuts sheet metal, installs insulation, cuts and splices wires and lubricates machinery. Assists in the installation and repair of pipes, drains, faucets, lavatories, toilets and other plumbing fixtures and equipment. Maintains inventory of parts and tools on assigned vehicles; operates hand and power tools and equipment necessary to complete work assignments. Maintains complete and accurate records of work completed. Operates City-Parish vehicles.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of standard practices of one or more of the building trades, including materials, tools, and procedures. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in the construction, mechanical and electrical trades. Knowledge of City-Parish standards and codes. Skill in the use of construction, repair, and maintenance of hand and power tools. Skill in the operation of light motor vehicles. Ability to read, interpret and work from sketches, blueprints, specifications, and to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with coworkers, superiors, and others. Ability to physically perform assigned tasks. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and two years of experience in one of the building trades.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position. Position(s) of this classification may require possession of the appropriate Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) refrigerant recycling and recovery certification (Type I, II, III or Universal) for technicians (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990).

OTHER JOB ASPECTS
