GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of a departmental supervisor, performs technical, sub-professional engineering and construction work. Work may involve working on a survey crew; inspecting plans and work in progress; maintaining accurate maps of streets, rights of way, water mains, sewers, and sidewalks; and analysis of data from traffic counters. Work is assigned orally or in writing, and is reviewed daily through personal observation. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Serves on a survey crew; gathers data; completes field notes; locates property and lot lines; references permanent markers. Maintains records specific to area of assignment; researches files; responds to inquiries whether in person or by telephone. Reviews maps; prepares and updates maps and notes; draws details of rights-of-way, sidewalks, and streets. Reviews construction plans; assists with inspections of construction sites for conformance with approved plans; ensures compliance with applicable codes. Draws construction plans; assists in preparation of bid specifications and packages. Operates and maintains equipment necessary to task assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles, procedures, methods, and techniques of drafting. Knowledge of algebra, plane geometry, or trigonometry. Knowledge of principles, procedures, and practices of engineering. Knowledge of principles, procedures, and practices of surveying. Knowledge of engineering maps and records. Knowledge of engineering terminology and nomenclature. Knowledge of City-Parish codes and ordinances applicable to areas of assignment. Knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques applicable to building and construction work. Skill in the operation of modern survey equipment. Skill in the operation of modern office equipment such as computers, calculators, copiers, blueprint makers, microfilm readers and printers, and related peripherals. Skill in the safe operation of a light motor vehicle. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to physically perform the task assigned. Ability to deal with the public with tact and courtesy at all times. Ability to make decisions within established guidelines. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications. Ability to perform precise survey work. Ability to reduce, interpret, and apply field notes. Ability to apply standards firmly, tactfully, and impartially. Ability to make complex engineering computations accurately. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, supplemented by vocational or trade school courses in drafting, and two years of sub-professional engineering/architectural/construction experience (such as drafting, surveying, inspecting, etc.).

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
