GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the close training and supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs semiskilled work in the operation of sewage plant equipment on an assigned shift. Work involves responsibility for assisting in the safe operation, maintenance and reparation of a sewage treatment plant or pumping station. Performs a variety of water or wastewater treatment plant operations during an assigned shift to assist in maintaining the proper water or effluent standards as required. Employees of this class may be required to work shift work, overtime or be on twenty-four hour call. Work is reviewed through inspection of ongoing and completed work. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Routine cleaning and lubrication of specified equipment. Reads and records equipment settings and chemical levels; maintains other logs and records as specified. Performs a variety of other tests and functions related to the safe operation of water or wastewater plant. Assists in performing minor repair to pumps, motors, and other equipment; replaces equipment when necessary. Repairs broken water and chlorine lines.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the processes involved in the purification of water or the treatment of sewage, including some practical understanding of chemistry. Knowledge of how to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects in operation. Ability to learn the function and servicing requirements of mechanical equipment and machinery in treatment plants. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to read simple meters and charts accurately and maintain simple records. Ability to perform simple arithmetical computations. Ability to work effectively with coworkers and the public. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
