GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of a technical superior, performs responsible supervisory and skilled work in the operation of sewage treatment plant. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of a sewage treatment plant or pumping station on an assigned shift. Work requires technical knowledge and the use of independent judgment in operating the various kinds of equipment that are used in the treatment of sewage. An employee of this class may be required to work shift work, overtime, or be on 24-hour call. General supervision is exercised over Treatment Plant Operator Trainees, Treatment Plant Operators I or other assigned workers. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Plans, lays out, directs, supervises the operation and maintenance of a sewage treatment plant and the operating equipment; prepares work schedules, trains operators, and assigns them to specific shifts.
Instructs and supervises subordinates in plant procedures and operations; keeps records and prepares periodic summary report of operations.
Plans, lays out, directs, and supervises the operation of a sewage treatment plant on an assigned shift.
Supervises and participates in the inspection of machinery to determine that all machinery is operating properly.
Collects samples for laboratory tests; compiles and submits reports concerning the man hours and use of equipment; makes a periodic check of the calibration of flow recording stations.
Operates, repairs, or maintains various types of equipment.
Works with plant manager & assistant plant manager to implement any changes in plant procedures.
Monitors the malfunction alarm panels located throughout the plant.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the operation principles and theories of the treatment plants for which responsible.
Knowledge of the established routines and practices for the operation of the plant equipment and related testing and measuring devices used in assignment.
Knowledge of the preventive maintenance practices applicable to equipment operated.
Knowledge of the hazards associated with the work, and the safety precautions to be taken.
Knowledge of records maintenance practices as applied to plant operations.
Ability to organize, supervise and inspect the work of operators and others engaged in sewage plant operation.
Ability to keep records and prepare clear and concise reports of operations.
Ability to ensure that safety rules are enforced.
Ability to work effectively with coworkers and the public.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and three years of journeyman level experience in the operation of a sewage treatment plant.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Possession of a Class IV Wastewater Treatment Certificate as issued by the Louisiana State Department of Health.
