GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs technical, inspectional and investigational work for the Wastewater Collections division. Work involves the receipt, investigation and resolution of sewer complaints. An employee of this classification is required to document problems and work being performed. This employee is also responsible for follow-up inspections of finished projects for citizen's satisfaction. Supervision may be exercised over a small crew of workers as assigned. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Supervises a small crew of workers as assigned and participates in the verification and investigations of sewer complaints received by making on-site visits and inspections.
Diagnoses problems and channels complaints to the proper division for resolution; makes recommendations and adjustments to satisfy the complaints; assists other departments in location of sewer problems.
Monitors sewer contract work; approves payment upon completion of work; documents all completions and payments.
Performs follow-up on complaints and resolution for citizen's satisfaction.
Maintains daily log of all citizen contact activities, logs personal assessment of problems and accompanying explanation of resolution.
Oversees and participates in the work of unskilled, semiskilled, and skilled workers in the proper setup and operation of equipment for sewer inspections and repair.
Analyzes sewer maps.
Conducts shoring and excavations, visible smoke tests, dye tests, TV investigations, and stoppage investigations.
Attends preventive maintenance and safety meetings; conducts safety meetings.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of construction and maintenance activities as it relates to sewer repair.
Knowledge of equipment and tools used in construction and repair work.
Knowledge of techniques used in resolving complaints in a fair and effective manner.
Knowledge of pumps, motors, valves and equipment utilized in water or sewer lines.
Knowledge of laws or ordinances governing sewer and sewer systems operations.
Ability to read maps and find location from instruction or a map.
Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public, fellow employees and workers.
Ability to analyze problems from field observation and make recommendations for resolution.
Ability to supervise others in a manner conducive to maximum performance.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, three years of experience in sewer, water or drainage construction and maintenance, and two years of experience in the resolution of complaints involving public contact.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
