GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of a higher classification, performs entry-level skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of two-way radios and associated electronic systems. Work is largely performed on vehicles, involves responsibility for completing electronic assignments, and ensuring electronic and radio equipment is maintained in continuous operational order. Assignments are received either orally or in writing. Employees may be required to be on emergency call-out one week a month to maintain base stations and other emergency equipment. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Installs, modifies, maintains, and repairs a variety of mobile and fixed two-way radio-telephone equipment, including electronic sirens, radio control receivers, remote control units, electronic equipment, electromechanical equipment, and solid state equipment. Provides technical assistance to telecommunications personnel in the performance of their duties. Checks power output, frequency, and deviation of transmitters and mobile stations for compliance with Federal Communications Commission regulations; isolates defects and replaces defective parts; repairs public address systems and other minor electrical and electronic systems. Repairs and installs antennas and sirens on emergency vehicles.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the radio repair and electronic trades. Knowledge of the principles and theories of electricity and radio. Knowledge of the component parts of electronic, electromechanical, and radio equipment. Knowledge of 12-volt automotive wiring systems and direct current (DC) systems. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved with electronic, electromechanical, and radio equipment. Skill in the repair of electronic and electrical equipment. Ability to install, alter, repair, maintain, and locate defects in a variety of electronic and radio equipment and systems. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions. Ability to work from wiring diagrams, blueprints, and sketches. Ability to use discretion with fellow workers, personnel from other departments, and with the public contacted in the course of work. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department.
