GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of a higher classification, work involves responsibility for performing routine tasks in servicing automotive equipment, including oil and water, checking batteries, lubrication, cleaning of equipment, tire repairs and routine manual work in the municipal service station. Employees of this class may also perform general custodial duties in maintaining service areas and buildings. Performs other work as requested. Work is reviewed through comments and reports of operating personnel and by the observation of equipment performance.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Services automotive equipment with fuel, oil, water, antifreeze, and air; cleans windshields, windows, mirrors, and lights; completes charge tickets. Checks water level in batteries; fixes flat tires; washes and cleans vehicles and truck bodies. Changes oil and filters and greases cars, light and heavy trucks, and varied heavy equipment. Cleans grease and wash racks; sweeps service area, shop office, and restrooms. Makes road calls to fix flat tires, to provide booster battery service, or to tow in disabled vehicles. Performs general custodial duties in maintaining service area buildings and grounds; cleans building areas, including sweeping floors, cutting grass, maintaining yard areas, and general repair of outdoor fixtures. Performs daily maintenance on shop equipment. Maintains, checks, and balances service records; checks for proper completion of charge tickets. Records speedometer readings, tire and equipment numbers, and keeps the proper maintenance of such records.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles and practices of servicing automotive equipment and of making minor repairs. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the proper safety precautions involved in the work. Knowledge of methods and materials of tire repair. Knowledge of tire sizes and compositions. Ability to keep simple material records. Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions. Ability to perform general custodial duties in the maintenance of buildings and grounds. Ability and physical strength to lift heavy objects. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Ability to read and write, and one year of experience in the servicing of light and/or heavy duty automotive equipment.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license or a valid Louisiana Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A, B, or C with appropriate endorsements. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
