GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the Airport Police/ARFF Lieutenant, performs responsible supervisory police and aircraft rescue-fire-fighting work on an assigned shift at the Greater Baton Rouge Airport District. Work involves responsibility for performing and ensuring the performance of duties directed at the prevention of crime, the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Employees of this class are required to operate and instruct subordinates in the operation of rescue-fire-fighting apparatus in the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions. A portion of time is spent in supervising routine terminal and facilities patrol and filling out standard duty reports. General supervision is exercised over an assigned shift. Work is evaluated through periodic conferences and reviews. Incumbent is on twenty-four hour call. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Responds to aircraft emergencies and mock disaster drills, participating in and directing rescue-fire-fighting activities until relieved of command by a superior officer; acts as incident commander until relieved by the captain or lieutenant. Supervises and participates in the patrol of hangers, warehouses, parking areas, runways, ramps, and the terminal area to prevent theft, vandalism and trespassing. Conducts training in law enforcement and aircraft rescue-fire-fighting techniques; maintains a program of regularly scheduled training exercises; maintains certification as an instructor in required subjects. Fills out inspection forms, arrest reports, accident records and constitutional rights and consent to questioning forms. Acts as internal affairs officer when required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to airport law enforcement and fire safety. Knowledge of firefighting equipment and modern methods and techniques used in aircraft rescue-fire-fighting operations, structural firefighting and first aid practices. Knowledge of airport law enforcement procedures and applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Skill in the use and care of firearms. Ability to supervise the work of subordinate personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to drive and effectively operate rescue-fire-fighting vehicles and related equipment. Ability to supervise subordinates and make decisions in varied situations under hazardous and stressful conditions. Ability to understand and follow complex, oral and written instructions. Ability to perform strenuous work with sufficient strength and agility under adverse and hazardous conditions. Ability to establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, the public and other law enforcement officials. Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and two years of experience in airport law enforcement and aircraft rescue-fire-fighting work.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Ability to obtain a law enforcement commission from the Greater Baton Rouge Airport Police/ARFF Division.

OTHER JOB ASPECTS
For security reasons, as per TSA provision 1542; all applicant/employees of the Greater Baton Rouge Airport District who have access to restricted areas will be required to have a ten (10) year criminal background check to the extent allowable by the law. Employees found to have an excessive criminal record or other misrepresentations of employment will not be eligible for employment.
