GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the administrative direction of the Mayor-President, performs advanced level, public relations and administrative work serving as executive assistant to the mayor-president. Work involves highly responsible administrative and complex public relations work keeping the media and public abreast of programs, administrative matters and schedules involving the Mayor-President's Office and City-Parish government. Work involves assisting the Mayor's office in all phases of communication and dissemination of information as it relates to City-Parish government. Work requires the exercise of considerable independent judgment as well as strict confidentiality and is reviewed through conferences and results obtained. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Serves as executive assistant to the Mayor-President relating to public relations issues. Serves as liaison between the Office of the Mayor-President and the media, public and officials regarding the communication of information concerning programs, activities and schedules as they relate to city government. Works closely with the Parish Attorney and the State Legislature regarding proposed legislation impacting and relating to city government; researches data, detailing effects of legislation on City-Parish governmental operations. Makes recommendations regarding release of sensitive material and issues to the public; maintains the highest degree of confidentiality. Interprets and distributes departmental policies and procedures to the media, the public, and other officials. Speaks before the media, the public and other officials on topics related to city government in an effort to generate interest and support.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of journalistic principles and practices. Knowledge of English usage and the requirements of press, radio, and television broadcasters. Knowledge of organizational structure, administrative policies and legislative procedures of City-Parish government. Knowledge of department operational policies and procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and interpret State Legislation. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to groups and to individuals. Ability to assume delegated authority in assigned areas. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff, other departments, divisions, agencies, news media and the public. Ability to supervise the work of a moderate sized office staff; exercise initiative, independence, and sound judgment in supervisory duties. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of records and materials of a sensitive nature. Ability to work independently and effectively to resolve administrative problems. Ability to prepare statistical analysis.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in business or public administration, public relations or journalism, or a closely related field, supplemented by three years of administrative experience in public relations.
