GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of a council member, performs clerical duties combined with the receipt of numerous complaints and problems acknowledged by East Baton Rouge Parish residents; forwards this information to the appropriate City-Parish department. In the absence of a council member, attends various official functions, events or meetings and represents the council member. Employees of this class work on a part-time basis. Performs other work as requested. Note: Employees within this classification are hired on a part-time basis and paid at an hourly rate.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Interviews and screens calls from constituents in a pleasant and tactful manner; receives complaints and requests for information; answers or routes complaints and requests to appropriate City-Parish departments. In the absence of a council member, attends various official functions, events or meetings and represents the council member; keeps the council member informed of such activities. Coordinates and schedules appointments with constituents and council member; prepares and maintains a monthly Calendar of Events listing activities of the council member, including council meetings, standing committees, boards and commissions meetings, or other scheduled events. Composes and types letters and other materials to constituents, City-Parish department representatives, and other elected officials. Serves as liaison between a council member, other departments/divisions and the general public.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles of office practices and the ability to apply them to office operations. Knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic. Knowledge of organizational structure, legislative and administrative procedures of City-Parish government. Skill in the use and operation of modern specialized office equipment, including word processor, computer terminal, and word processing software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, other officials, civic and governmental organizations, and the general public. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to groups and to individuals. Ability to deal with difficult or unpleasant situations.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, supplemented by some college level course work, and two years of responsible clerical duties involving public contact.
