GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of a Senior Special Assistant Parish Attorney, division head, or section chief, represents the City-Parish in all phases of civil or criminal litigation. Work may involve rendering professional legal advice to City-Parish department heads and officials. Work is performed with limited independence and is reviewed periodically through conferences. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
MAY BE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ANY OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING: Serves as legal counsel for various City-Parish departments or agencies concerning a wide range of issues. Researches and prepares legal opinions for City-Parish departments, agencies, governing boards or public officials. Represents the City-Parish in claims or litigation matters, on the state or federal level, including trial and appellate work. Drafts City-Parish ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds or other legal documents. Responsible for the acquisition and sale of property, through expropriation or adjudication. Prosecutes traffic or misdemeanor criminal cases in City Court.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of municipal, state and federal laws. Knowledge of pre-trial and trial procedures in the litigation process; including knowledge of the rules of evidence, civil procedure and criminal procedure. Knowledge of the methods of legal research, including proficiency in computer based research. Knowledge of established precedents and sources of legal reference applicable to municipal matters. Skill in the preparation and trial of civil law cases and misdemeanor criminal matters. Ability to analyze and prepare a wide variety of legal documents. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Juris Doctorate degree.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
