GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the administrative direction of an employee of a higher classification, performs highly responsible advanced professional legal work supervising other attorneys in the City Prosecutor's office. Supervises subordinate staff and other attorneys. Work involves assisting the City Prosecutor and Senior Special Assistant Parish Attorney in ensuring that various legal cases in the City Court are handled efficiently and justly. Work is performed with some independence and is evaluated through conferences, reports and results obtained on major legal issues confronting the City. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Assists City Prosecutor in evaluating cases to determine the disposition of various criminal and traffic offenses and in determining whether or not staff members will pursue formal prosecution. Supervises and provides support to lower level attorneys in performing complex legal work in one of the assigned sections within the City Prosecutor's office. Coordinates research and work of staff in performing administrative details. Examines legal data to help determine prosecuting law suits. Performs administrative tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of common, parish, state and federal laws and precedents, with particular reference to their affect on City-Parish government and its operation. Knowledge of the principles and methods of administration, organization and supervision. Knowledge of judicial procedures and of the rules of evidence. Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and practices of legal research. Knowledge of civil pleadings and of effective techniques in the trial of such cases. Skill in conducting research on complex legal problems and in preparation of court legal opinions. Ability to analyze legal issues, facts, evidence and precedents in highly complex cases and present such materials effectively in oral and written form. Ability to organize, interpret and apply legal principles and knowledge to legal problems. Ability to prepare contracts and other legal documents. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with City officials, court personnel and the public. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, to individuals and to groups. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, City-Parish officials and the general public.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Juris Doctorate degree, supplemented by three years of experience in the practice of criminal law, including supervisory experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Admission to the State Bar.
