GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under administrative direction from the Parish Attorney, supervises subordinate personnel to ensure that various legal cases in the City Court are handled efficiently and justly. Provides support, advice and direction to staff, boards, agencies and commissions in the area of law enforcement. Work is performed under minimal supervision, and requires independence in thought. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Evaluates cases to determine the disposition of various criminal and traffic offenses; determines whether or not staff members will pursue formal prosecution; determines manner with which staff should deal with a case accordingly.
Informs the public on criminal and traffic issues.
Supervises and directs staff members; provides support to staff.
Prepares and controls the department budget.
Offers advice on issues of law enforcement to various organizations throughout the community when requested.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Skill in the use of some technical office equipment.
Knowledge of the common law and of city, state and federal laws and precedents, with particular reference to the subject area of assignment.
Knowledge of judicial procedures and of the rules of evidence.
Knowledge of effective implementation of administrative and supervisory techniques.
Knowledge of criminal and traffic law and of effective techniques used in such cases.
Ability to analyze legal issues, facts, evidence and precedents and to present such materials effectively in oral and written form.
Ability to assist staff in analyzing cases and evidence.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with city officials, court personnel, staff, supervisors, members of various agencies, boards and commissions and the general public.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to exercise independence in thought.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Juris Doctorate degree supplemented by four years of progressively responsible experience in criminal law with two years of experience in a supervisory position.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Admission to the State Bar.
