Under the direction of a higher classification, performs beginning level routine clerical work of limited complexity. Work involves a variety of clerical duties which follow well-established procedures. Employees of this classification may receive detailed instructions on new assignments. As experience is gained, regular and routine assignments are performed independently. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Operates computer terminal or other related data entry equipment in the posting of documents. Types correspondence, minutes, reports, memorandums, or other documents from copy, rough draft, or other sources. Opens, sorts, and distributes incoming mail; folds, stuffs, and seals outgoing mail for delivery. Records incoming correspondence and materials; sorts and files correspondence and other documents by predetermined categories; records information and keeps track of the movement of file material. Acts as desk clerk or receptionist on routine matters; answers telephones and greets visitors, providing assistance, information, and direction as needed. Mends library books and binds magazines; prepares books for shipment to a bindery; checks book shipments when received, labels book spines and pockets, inserts pockets in books, and covers books. Operates modern specialized office equipment including word processor, calculator, copy machine, microfilmer, fax machine, and other office equipment in the performance of clerical operations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment. Knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic. Skill in the use of computer terminals and related data entry software for selected positions. Ability to maintain clerical records. Ability to type a variety of letters, records, and reports using a computer. Ability to deal with the public with tact and courtesy. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position(s) may require passing a typing (40 words per minute), word processing, spreadsheet, and/or other computer skill test(s). In accordance with Licensing Standards of the Louisiana Administrative Code (Title 67, Part V, Subpart 8, Chapter 75, Juvenile Detention Facilities, §7511. Facility Responsibilities, B. Criminal Background Clearance), all employees of this classification assigned to the Juvenile Services Detention Center must pass a criminal background check and/or be fingerprinted at the time of appointment. Both appointment and continued employment at this location is contingent upon the ability to pass a criminal background check. Failure to pass a criminal background check renders a candidate or current employee ineligible for employment at this location.
