GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of a higher classification, performs intermediate level clerical work of moderate complexity. Work involves a variety of clerical duties requiring some independent judgment and decision-making in accordance with departmental policies and practices. The primary emphasis of this classification is the level of difficulty and responsibility for more complex clerical duties. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Oversees, with relative independence, a significant share of clerical procedures and office activities, requiring some decision-making in accordance with departmental policies and regulations. Provides assistance, information,. and direction to visitors, including taxpayers, public officials, and visiting dignitaries from other communities. Explains departmental policies, procedures, and regulations to other employees and the general public. Receives, researches, and records calls, walk-ins, and mail of citizen complaints regarding City-Parish related matters; prepares work orders. Types forms, reports, memorandums, correspondence, tabulations, budgets, cards, minutes, and other documents from general instructions, rough copy, or other sources. Orders and maintains inventory for all office supplies. Performs less complex arithmetical assignments; checks calculations for errors and accuracy. Operates modern specialized office equipment including word processor, calculator, copy machine, microfilmer, fax machine, and other office equipment in the performance of clerical operations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, equipment, and standard clerical techniques. Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, procedures, organization, and functions. Knowledge of the various departments and agencies within the City-Parish government. Knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic. Skill in the use and operation of modern specialized office equipment including calculator, microfilmer, word processor, computer terminal, and associated equipment. Ability to deal with the public with tact and courtesy. Ability to type a variety of letters, records, and reports using a computer. Ability to make arithmetical calculations and tabulations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and experience in clerical duties.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.

OTHER JOB ASPECTS
Position(s) may require passing a typing (45 words per minute), word processing (including spreadsheet application), Microsoft Windows proficiency, and/or other computer skill test(s). For security purposes, all applicants/employees of EMS-Prison Medical Services must obtain and maintain security clearance with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office throughout employment in this classification. In accordance with Licensing Standards of the Louisiana Administrative Code (Title 67, Part V, Subpart 8, Chapter 75, Juvenile Detention Facilities, §7511. Facility Responsibilities, B. Criminal Background Clearance), all employees of this classification assigned to the Juvenile Services Detention Center must pass a criminal background check and/or be fingerprinted at the time of appointment. Both appointment and continued employment at this location is contingent upon the ability to pass a criminal background check. Failure to pass a criminal background check renders a candidate or current employee ineligible for employment at this location.
