GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of the Senior Crime Specialist, performs highly responsible clerical work requiring independent judgment and decision-making. Work is specialized and involves analyzing and coding criminal reports according to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Uniform Crime Reporting standards. Work is performed with considerable independence and is evaluated through reports and results obtained. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Analyzes, categorizes and records data according to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) standards and practices of the Crime Statistics and Research Division. Utilizes the criminal reporting system to locate all reports associated with crimes to ensure proper classification; generates reports to verify statistical standards and accuracy. Monitors and reports any potential series of crimes to the Crime Statistician for further analysis; reports problems found within criminal reports to the Senior Crime Specialist. Participates in crime research and analysis activities with other divisions within the Baton Rouge Police Department. Analyzes reports for entry in non-UCR databases for the Commission for the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) analysis; assists with CALEA required studies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of division and departmental operations, functions, policies and procedures. Knowledge of criminal procedures and law enforcement agencies and techniques. Knowledge of terminology used in criminal reporting. Skill in the use of modern office equipment such as the telephone, calculator, copier, personal computer and related peripherals. Skill in the use of a computer for word processing and spreadsheet applications. Ability to exercise sound judgment in analyzing and coding criminal reports. Ability to exercise initiative and independence in the performance of duties. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and one year of experience in responsible clerical positions involving analysis and coding.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
