GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of an employee of a higher classification, performs responsible administrative and supervisory work in the area of coordination and administration of the Local Area Network (LAN), the Wide Area Network (WAN), the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), and Voice Over IP (VoIP) Telecommunications systems. Work involves initial selection and updating of hardware; selection of compatible, interfacing software; coordination of services; and the supervision of technical staff of a very large department (e.g. Library, City Court, etc.). Work also involves the use of independent judgment and is reviewed through personal conferences and for results obtained. An employee in this class may be subject to unusual working hours, as well as after-hours calls for situations needing immediate attention. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Coordinates the use of the PC LAN network hardware and interfacing software; selects equipment and appropriate programs.
Administers and oversees network design, implementation, management, and troubleshooting of network switches, routers, firewalls, security appliances, servers, and underlying communication protocols and supporting network hardware.
Troubleshoots and repairs system problems; provides training for user department personnel in the utilization of the PC LAN system network.
Plans, directs, trains, and evaluates technical support staff.
Performs total system data backups on a daily basis; runs and monitors anti-virus software; performs mock restores of data.
Reviews and presents LAN system policies for approval.
Assists in the development of long-range planning for the network and security infrastructure; develops and implements security standards, policies, and procedures.
Prepares and submits divisional budget; makes purchase requests and recommendations.

Knowledge of structured techniques of PC network management.
Knowledge of computer hardware and software.
Knowledge of best data security practices, risk mitigation, intrusion detection, damage mitigation, disaster recovery, and legal liability concerns.
Knowledge of advanced networking fundamentals and protocols.
Knowledge of computer languages.
Knowledge of computer system design and analysis.
Ability to lead and work on multiple projects, and troubleshoot and resolve problems.
Ability to write computer programs in the necessary language.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to analyze complex procedures and systems and develop problem solving strategies.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, and two years of experience in local and wide area network administration.
