GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of a higher classification, performs entry level professional work assisting in the design, implementation, and maintenance of a Geographic Information System (GIS). Work involves GIS spatial analysis, and researching and interpreting source data for the preparation of maps, charts and drawings. Work requires the exercise of independent judgment in accordance with established policies, rules and regulations. Work is reviewed through inspection, oral and written reports, and for results obtained. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Assists in the design, implementation and maintenance of a Geographic Information System (GIS).
Performs GIS spatial analysis; prepares maps, charts and drawings from aerial maps and other survey data; identifies, scales and orients geodetic points, elevations, and other topographic features and cartographic detail.
Revises existing maps and charts and corrects maps in various stages of compilation.
Maintains GIS layers and databases using remote sensing, computer-aided design and other cartography sources.
Assists higher-level GIS personnel in converting GIS spatial data into various GIS formats, and verifies database attributes.
Prepares a variety of technical reports, correspondence, manuals, procedures and other written materials.
Researches and evaluates source data using routine methods.
Creates and maintains metadata.
Attends GIS planning meetings; works with GIS project requesters and users to assure project quality and timely completion; works with GIS personnel in various departments.
Monitors developments in the field of geographic system usage.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles and practices of a Geographic Information System program.
Knowledge of industry-specific (e.g., wastewater, engineering, planning and zoning) terminology and symbology.
Knowledge of digitizing and data manipulation procedures for geographic information systems.
Skill in the use of a variety of computers and computer-aided design software.
Ability to use graphic instructions such as blueprints, layouts, or other visual aids.
Ability to read and use zoning maps, quarter-section maps, plat maps, land use maps, single line maps, aerial maps, blueprints, and engineering plans.
Ability to perform technical research related to the GIS program.
Ability to present facts clearly and accurately in graphic form.
Ability to communicate, and establish and maintain effective working relationships, with other employees, officials, and the general public.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in geographic information systems, geography, planning, civil engineering, computer science, or a related field, and one year of experience in geographic information systems.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
