GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of Library personnel of a higher classification, performs routine manual and clerical work in the parish library system. Work involves shelving and filing books and other library materials and keeping shelves and files orderly. Employees of this classification may assist professional and clerical personnel at the circulation desk during busy periods and perform other routine library assignments in other library divisions as needed. Work may be performed at any of the City-Parish libraries and is subject to continuous review and close supervision. Performs other work as requested. Note: Employees within this classification are hired on a part-time basis and paid at an hourly rate.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Sorts and returns books and magazines to proper locations; shelves materials; refills pamphlets. Checks and packs books, opens and closes windows and shades, tidies reading rooms, turns off heat, turns out lights, and locks doors. Assists staff with routine tasks; may help patrons find books; assists patrons with microfilming and copy machines. Reads shelves of assigned section and replaces books in the proper order under the prescribed system. Keeps magazines in the proper order; searches for and locates books and magazines requested by patrons and library personnel. Performs routine clerical work; performs messenger and delivery tasks; may do routine book mending work and art work. Prepares meeting rooms; straightens up work areas. Shows children's films and assists with story-time.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with library patrons. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and patrons. Ability to learn, perform assigned tasks, and willingness to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to push, lift, bend, and reach as needed for shelving, moving heavy boxes of books, setting up tables for programs, etc. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of the tenth grade.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
