GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of a Librarian of a higher classification, performs general librarian duties or assists in the performance of specialized duties. Work involves the application of professional library techniques and procedures to a variety of library operations at Main or in branch libraries. Employees of this class are expected to use acquired knowledge and skills in the performance of technical library work. General supervision may be exercised over a small group of clerical and paraprofessional employees. Librarians are allowed latitude in the performance of their professional duties. Work is reviewed through personal conferences, written reports and results obtained. Performs other work as requested. Note: Some employees within this classification are hired on a part-time basis and paid at an hourly rate.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Assists readers and patrons in the use of the library by aiding with book and multimedia selections, using an online library catalog, public access computers, the Internet, proprietary databases, and other library resources. Performs research and reference work, including e-mail reference. Supervises and trains Library Technicians, Library Pages, Library Aides, and Clerical Specialists in general library work. Supervises a section at a community library and acts as building supervisor in the absence of the branch head; responsible for opening or closing library on a rotating basis with other library personnel. Develops and teaches computer-based classes for patrons or staff. Plans and conducts workshops, story times, public presentations, community outreach, book talks, and other programs. Performs other professional tasks as assigned, including collection management, compiling statistics, creating reports, cataloging, designing web pages, preparing of program materials, or creating spreadsheets and databases to track select library programs and resources.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the current principles, practices and procedures of professional library science. Knowledge of library print and online reference and research materials and tools. Knowledge of reader interest levels, books, and authors. Knowledge of clerical processes, procedures, and records used in a large library system. Knowledge and skill in an online environment and standard office productivity applications. Ability to troubleshoot computer and printer problems. Ability to stimulate interest in library activities. Ability to plan and supervise the work of a moderate sized staff of paraprofessional and clerical employees. Ability to train individuals, evaluate workflow and delegate duties. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons and employees. Ability to use selected multimedia equipment. Ability to push, lift, bend, and reach as needed for shelving, moving heavy boxes of books, tables for programs, etc. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Master's degree from an accredited school of library and information science.
