GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Prison Health Care Manager, provides quality mental health care to the population of the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Work involves providing independent assessment, implementing treatment plans, and independent counseling with a concentration on clients or offenders with specialized/atypical cases. Performs case management including reporting high profile and intensive cases to the psychiatrist. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Provides mental health evaluations, crisis intervention, assessments, and follow-up care aimed at identifying the special problems and needs manifested in specific high risk populations, such as abused adults, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), neurological trauma or disease, acute and chronic psychiatric diagnoses, abusive parents and offenders.
Develops and implements case management plans of service and social work treatment to address identified needs, problems, and behavioral/emotional reactions of patients and families on mental health observation units and other units as assigned.
Determines and coordinates disposition of patients for appropriate level of mental health care including discharge planning; may assist in scheduling psychological testing.
Participates in case conferences and treatment planning for patients receiving and being considered for mental health treatment; participates in clinical supervision, mental health, and medical rounds.
Collaborates with Parish Prison security and the Department of Corrections to ensure access to patients, proper housing, and treatment disposition; coordinates patient care with other institutional programs.
Acts as a liaison to court programs; provides expert testimony and/or advocacy representation for clients in court cases and release alternative programs.
Completes required statistical reports and documentation.
May supervise social work interns or student volunteers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, standards, and court orders regarding prison health care services.
Knowledge of mathematics and English used to keep records and produce reports.
Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
Skill in advanced social work practice based on the application of social work theory, knowledge, ethics and methods to restore or enhance social, psychosocial, or biopsychosocial functioning of individuals, couples, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
Ability to apply specialized knowledge and clinical social work skills which include prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, emotional, behavioral, and addiction disorders.
Ability to make reasonable and objective decisions and recommendations within established policies and guidelines.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to groups and to individuals.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with medical staff, supervisors, and the general public.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Master's degree in social work and five years of clinical social work experience.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Must possess and maintain State of Louisiana licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) throughout employment in this classification. Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.
OTHER JOB ASPECTS
For security purposes, all applicants/employees of EMS-Prison Medical Services must obtain and maintain security clearance with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office throughout employment in this classification.
