GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the EMS Shift Supervisor and/or the Chief EMS Operations Officer, performs responsible technical work in assisting in the supervision of the EMS field operations. Employees of this class may act as paramedics when needed. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Assists in supervising EMT Paramedics and EMT Intermediates on an assigned twenty-four hour shift. Assists in coordinating EMS operations with existing public safety agencies; i.e., Civil Defense, Private Ambulance Services, hospitals, and central 911 communications officers. Assists in supervising operational procedures relating to supplies, drugs, and equipment. Assists in supervising EMS radio communications and coordinating vehicle maintenance, scheduling of repairs, and the maintenance of communications equipment records. Serves as a paramedic on a substitute basis as needed. Assists in evaluating employee performances for adherence to proper EMS procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of paraprofessional emergency medical practices and techniques of the basic and advanced life support. Knowledge of supervisory procedures. Ability to identify emergency medical situations and to administer appropriate medical treatment in order to stabilize patients' condition. Ability to supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, supplemented by completion of one year or 30 semester hours of college and completion of an approved EMT Paramedic course, and one year of experience in the supervision and training of subordinate personnel involved in emergency medical work.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Registration as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and certification by Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
