GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the Chief EMS Operations Officer, performs highly responsible work in media, public relations, and coordination of special events. Work involves promoting Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to the general public and the medical community. This position is responsible for coordinating and supervising all assigned medical personnel during large-scale events. This role involves effective coordination, adherence to established medical protocols, and the delivery of high-quality patient care in fast-paced environments. Work is reviewed through personal conferences and the results obtained. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Collaborates with various organizations and individuals to coordinate all special events ensuring that all necessary medical coverage and related work details are effectively managed.
Schedules all personnel; ensures all emergency medical response vehicles, medical supplies, and equipment are available; monitors each event and work detail.
Supervises medical personnel to ensure coordinated high-quality care in accordance with established standards.
Maintains effective working relationships with all levels of the local media.
Responds to newsworthy events and stories by preparing and reporting news releases for the newspaper, radio, and television.
Prepares and makes public service announcements for radio and television.
Coordinates all press conferences and television/radio interviews involving EMS.
Assists in the development and implementation of public education and public awareness programs.
Responds to requests and acts as a guest speaker for organizations or businesses interested in presentations regarding the EMS system, 911 operations, or any public awareness initiatives associated with the EMS system.
Possess the capability to function as an EMT-Paramedic as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of basic news media and other organizations used in public information programs.
Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques used in conducting training programs.
Knowledge of paraprofessional emergency medical practices and techniques of the basic and advanced life support level.
Ability to supervise subordinate personnel.
Ability to speak effectively before large groups and to present information accurately.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other organizations, the news media, and fellow employees.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Associate's degree, or two years of experience in public awareness/relations programs.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Registration as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and certification by Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. Certification as a Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) instructor from the American Heart Association within (1) year of date of appointment. Must have a valid driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.
