GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the EMS Administrator and the EMS Public Education Manager, performs highly responsible work in media, public relations and coordinating special events. Work involves promoting the Department to the general public and medical community. Work is reviewed through personal conferences and for results obtained. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Coordinates with various organizations and individuals all special events and details requiring medical coverage. Schedules all personnel, ensuring all emergency medical response vehicles, medical supplies and equipment are available; monitors each event and detail. Maintains effective working relationships with all levels of the local media. Responds to newsworthy events and stories by preparing and reporting news releases to the newspaper, radio and television. Prepares and performs public service announcements to run on radio and television. Coordinates all press conferences and television/radio interview involving EMS. Assists in the development and implementation of public education and public awareness programs. Solicits and/or acts as guest speaker to any organization or business requesting presentations on the EMS system, 911, or any public awareness program related to the EMS system.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of basic news media and other organizations used in public information programs. Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques used in conducting training programs. Knowledge of paraprofessional emergency medical practices and techniques of the basic and advanced life support level. Ability to supervise subordinate personnel. Ability to speak effectively before large groups and to present information accurately. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other organizations, the news media, and fellow employees. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree, or two years of experience in public awareness/relations programs, supplemented by completion of an approved EMT Paramedic course.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Registration as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and certification by Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, supplemented by certification within a reasonable period of time, as a Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) instructor from the American Heart Association.
