GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the EMS Administrator, performs highly responsible work in conducting public awareness and education programs of the citizen's role in the East Baton Rouge Parish Emergency Medical Services system by promoting citizen CPR training and other public medical education programs. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Solicits the involvement of and makes presentations to civic organizations and other public and private groups to promote public awareness of the EMS system, 911 emergency telephone number and citizen CPR training.
Solicits time and space from the local news media to promote public awareness of the citizen's role in the EMS system.
Schedules, directs and conducts or monitors CPR instructors in a variety of CPR programs.
Researches the impact of citizen CPR training on the mortality rates of cardiac arrest patients.
Establishes working relationships with local organizations involved in CPR training for the enhancement of all programs and to provide information on the EMS system.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of Basic and Advanced Life support techniques and practices including CPR.
Knowledge of EMS system design and operations.
Knowledge of local organizations involved in CPR training.
Knowledge of the various news media and other organizations used in a public information program.
Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques used in conducting training programs.
Ability to supervise subordinate personnel.
Ability to speak effectively before large groups and to present information accurately.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other organizations, the news media, and fellow employees.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree, supplemented by completion of an approved EMT Paramedic course, and two years of experience as an instructor/trainer in CPR training programs.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Possession of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Registration as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and certification by Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, and current instructor/trainer or affiliate faculty status by the American Heart Association or equivalent rating from the Red Cross.
