GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the Emergency Medical Services Administrator and Medical Advisor, performs responsible technical medical work in the supervision of emergency medical employees in the emergency care and treatment of sickness and accident victims. Supervision is exercised directly over EMS Shift Supervisors and indirectly over EMT Paramedics and Intermediates. Employees are subject to twenty-four hour call for emergency situations. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Supervises subordinate shift supervisors; investigates employee complaints to ascertain facts and make appropriate recommendations. Ensures operational readiness of emergency medical vehicles, equipment and communications equipment; orders and issues emergency medical equipment and supplies. Develops policies for standard operating procedures for EMS vehicle crews and communications operations; observes employees performance to ensure adherence to established policies and medical standards. Reviews all emergency medical service operations with Medical Advisor and implements changes as directed; attends departmental and hospital meetings as required. Assists with the preparation of EMS budgets, specifications for purchase of vehicles and equipment, and public awareness programs as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with emergency medical work. Knowledge of supervisory techniques used in the emergency medical field. Knowledge of controlling laws and regulations affecting emergency medical services. Ability to supervise and direct the work of subordinate personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to think and act quickly, calmly and accurately in emergency situations. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in a related field, supplemented by completion of an approved EMT Paramedic course, and three years of experience in the supervision of emergency medical technicians.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Registration as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and certification by Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
