GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the EMT Training Officer, performs responsible technical medical work of an advanced paraprofessional nature in assisting in the training of emergency medical employees and public safety personnel in the emergency care and treatment of sickness and accident victims. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Assists in planning and directing a training program for EMT Paramedics, EMT Intermediates, and EMT-Basics that complies with licensing and certification regulations. Evaluates practical clinical skill performance of EMS field personnel; reviews patient run reports daily; assists in ensuring EMS employees are in compliance with licensing and certification requirements at all times. Conducts monthly lectures and workshops on emergency medical treatment, such as first aid and CPR training; participates in public awareness and continuing education programs on EMS services. Conducts field training of EMT Paramedics and EMT Intermediates on a weekly basis; conducts First Responder courses for the Baton Rouge Police and Fire Departments twice yearly. Attends departmental and hospital meetings as necessary.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of paraprofessional emergency medical practices and techniques of the basic and advanced life support level. Knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with emergency medical work. Knowledge of training and supervisory techniques used in the emergency medical field. Knowledge of controlling laws and regulations affecting emergency medical services. Ability to train and supervise subordinate personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to think and act quickly, calmly, and accurately in emergency situations. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, supplemented by completion of an approved EMT Paramedic course, and two years of experience in the training of emergency medical technicians.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Registration as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and certification by Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
