GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of a professional staff member, performs technical laboratory work in operating a chemical and bacteriological laboratory at a major treatment plant. Technical assistance may be given to treatment plant operator personnel to ensure proper functioning of treatment facilities and equipment. An employee of this class may be on twenty-four hour call. Work is reviewed through periodic conferences or reports. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Collects samples of plant effluent, partially treated wastewater, sludge, and other by-products. Performs routine bacteriological examinations of water, sewage, and industrial wastes. Conducts various analytical pollution control tests as mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency and/or other health agencies. Records data compiled as a result of testing; may inventory and requisition equipment and supplies. Operates various types of laboratory equipment, such as spectrograph, total organic carbon analyzer, autoclave, and multichannel-automated analyzer with linearized digital printer.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of laboratory, principles, terminology, and equipment pertaining to sanitary engineering, pollution, and environmental health control, bacteriology, and microbiology. Knowledge of applicable laws and regulatory codes relevant to pollution control and in methods of operation of pollution control facilities. Skill in the use and care of laboratory equipment. Ability to express and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and the general public. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to groups and to individuals. Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or microbiology, or a related field.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
