GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of professional superiors, performs responsible supervisory field work in the control and/or eradication of mosquitoes, rodents, and associated pests. Work involves responsibility for training and supervising subordinate pest control inspectors engaged in locating, identifying, and remedying pest related problems within East Baton Rouge Parish. Incumbents plan, assign, and monitor the work of subordinates, as well as performing advanced field work and initiating program modifications. Work is evaluated through periodic inspection and observation of results obtained. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Plans, monitors and evaluates the work of subordinate pest control personnel; performs routine and advanced fieldwork; supervises rodent program. Plans and conducts studies of breeding areas, population ecology and designs procedural field manuals for use by subordinates; compiles study results and makes recommendations. Develops, recommends and carries out modifications in pesticide application, field study procedures, and baiting or trapping materials and techniques. Assists professional superiors in conducting advanced studies and in conducting the parish wide encephalitis surveillance and area sanitation programs. Discusses pest control problems and treatment with individual property owners affected by the pest control program and resolves conflicts if they occur; enforces pest control regulations. Supervises pest control inspectors involved in rodent eradication.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the basic principles of elementary biology as related to mosquito and rodent control. Knowledge of the geography of East Baton Rouge Parish. Knowledge of mosquito and rodent control materials and methods and of standard sampling techniques. Knowledge of mosquito and rodent habits, fumigants, rodenticides, and insecticides. Ability to train and supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to determine the efficiency of pesticides and analyze their effect on humans, livestock and pests. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public. Ability to make elementary arithmetical calculations accurately. Ability to keep routine records and prepare and interpret reports, charts and graphs. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to groups and to individuals. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, including or supplemented by course work in elementary biology, and two years of experience in the control of household, field or animal pests.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification. Possession of a valid commercial pesticide applicator's certification in categories 8A-Mosquito Control, 8B-Rodent Control and/or 8C-Community Public Health Pest Control may be required for certain positions in this class.
