GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the close supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs manual work in the custodial care of public buildings and related facilities. Work involves varied cleaning tasks following established routines in an assigned building or building area. Primary responsibility is for cleaning and otherwise caring for buildings and equipment. Employees may be required to work unusual working hours and in more than one location. Work is reviewed through observation on the job. Performs other work as requested.
Note: Some employees within this classification are hired on a part-time basis and paid at an hourly rate.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Sweeps and mops floors; dusts and cleans offices, or other work areas; strips, waxes, and polishes floors; polishes furniture; collects and removes trash; washes walls and windows.
Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies; unstops sinks and toilets and reports the need for repairs.
Performs minor cleaning of upholstery and drapes; vacuums and shampoos carpets.
Sweeps sidewalks, pick up litter, and maintains walks and lawns around assigned buildings.
Replaces light bulbs and window glass; repairs door locks; makes basic repairs to furniture.
Keeps custodial materials and equipment clean and in order.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of cleaning materials, equipment, methods, and practices used in cleaning operations.
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other custodial equipment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary when using cleaning chemicals and equipment.
Ability to make minor repairs on building fixtures and equipment.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability and physical strength necessary to work long hours at custodial tasks.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read and write, and experience in custodial work involving the use of commercial cleaning materials and equipment.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
