GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the close supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs manual work maintaining public buildings and grounds and the transportation needs for grant funded agencies. Work involves varied cleaning and maintenance tasks in and around assigned buildings. Workers of this class also perform minor repair work on equipment and operate light automotive equipment in the performance of assigned duties. Some employees of this classification work shift work. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Vacuums and mops floors; dusts and cleans offices, or other work areas; strips and waxes floors; polishes furniture; collects and removes trash; washes walls and windows. Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies; unstops sinks and toilets and reports the need for repairs. Sweeps sidewalks, picks up litter, and maintains walks and lawns around assigned buildings. Performs minor cleaning of upholstery, drapes and blinds; vacuums and shampoos carpets. Operates light automotive equipment in the delivery of meals, supplies, and equipment; or in the transportation of clients, or patients. Replaces light bulbs, repairs door locks; replaces window glass; makes basic repair of furniture.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of cleaning and maintenance materials, equipment, methods, and practices used in custodial maintenance of a building and grounds. Knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing vans and other light automotive equipment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary when operating machinery using cleaning chemicals and equipment. Skill in the operation of light automotive equipment. Ability to learn the operation and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment. Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials, chemicals, and equipment. Ability to make minor repairs on building fixtures and equipment. Ability to work effectively with employees, supervisors, and the public. Sufficient physical strength to work long hours at custodial and maintenance tasks. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Ability to read and write, and experience in the custodial care of a building.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Must have a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.
