GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the facility manager, performs responsible supervisory detention work involving the care, treatment and supervision of delinquent juveniles at a detention facility. Work involves responsibility for supervising all aspects of the detention process in order to ensure good physical, emotional and moral health and development of the detainees. Work also involves assuring the general security and safety of the facility and its occupants. The incumbent of this classification works independently within the prescribed guidelines and regulations of the facility. Direct supervision is exercised over a moderate sized staff. Performs other work as requested.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Plans, organizes, and supervises daily the work of subordinate employees; makes adjustments to schedules to compensate for absences; calls in relief employees when needed. Establishes policies and procedures for the safe and efficient operation of the center. Supervises training of shift supervisors and qualifies them as meeting established standards. Plans, organizes and supervises work details and programs for detainees. Supervises the transfer of detainees for medical and non-medical reasons, etc. Assists or participates in assessments, evaluations, and other educational and behavioral health treatment services. Evaluates shift supervisors in accordance with an evaluation policy. Maintains log of daily events and incidents. Authorizes overtime, and approves vacation and compensatory time. Assigns tasks, e.g., unit supervision, transportation, recreation, to those shift supervisors under his or her supervision. Appears in court as needed to give testimony regarding detainees.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the operation of the detention facility. Knowledge of the principles and practices of group leadership, behavior patterns, and group attitudes of delinquents. Knowledge of general psychology as applied to detained juveniles. Ability to gain, hold the confidence of, and maintain a sympathetic and understanding attitude toward delinquent detainees. Ability to enforce regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality. Ability to understand and communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to supervise subordinate employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to exercise independent judgment and to make objective decisions regarding incidents of rule infraction or potential violence. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's and Master's degrees in criminal justice, social work, psychology, sociology, counseling, or a related behavioral science field, and two years of supervisory experience working with juveniles in a corrections or juvenile justice environment.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

In accordance with Licensing Standards of the Louisiana Administrative Code (Title 67, Part V, Subpart 8, Chapter 75, Juvenile Detention Facilities, §7511. Facility Responsibilities, B. Criminal Background Clearance), all employees of this classification assigned to the Juvenile Services Detention Center must pass a criminal background check and/or be fingerprinted at the time of appointment. Both appointment and continued employment at this location is contingent upon the ability to pass a criminal background check. Failure to pass a criminal background check renders a candidate or current employee ineligible for employment at this location.
