GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of an employee of a higher classification, performs professional work in instructing preschool-aged children in a preschool program. Work involves teaching preschool-aged children basic pre-elementary subjects. Work includes planning, organizing, and supervising classroom activities for the social, emotional, intellectual, and psychological growth of preschool-aged children. Instruction is individual or in groups and is adapted to the needs, interests, and abilities of the child. Work is reviewed through conferences and review of lesson plans. Performs other work as requested.
Note: Most employees within this classification are paid an hourly rate and work ten (10) months or less a year.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Utilizes the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) strategies to create an optimal learning environment.
Recruits classroom volunteers on an ongoing basis.
Works with parents and teacher aides to screen and assess children using Ages, Stages, and Questionnaire, (ASQ) and Teaching Strategies (TS) Gold Systems.
Provides the implementation of designated curriculum and individualization of instruction based upon assessment results.
Integrates regular music, movement, and outdoor/active play into the classroom day.
Completes Family Partnership Agreement Packets, by interviewing, setting family and child goals, and making appropriate referrals with enrolled families.
Leads and oversees the teaching of safety, health, dental, nutrition, self-help, self-esteem, social, language, literacy, problem solving, cognitive, and motor skills in the classroom.
Implements and models appropriate behavior guidance practices.
Participates in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process for serving children with special needs and implementation of an appropriate plan.
Documents attendance and all activities used in statistical analysis and submits accordingly any prescribed forms consistently, correctly, and promptly in ChildPlus.
Provides for meal counts at point of service.
Maintains and provides referrals of behavioral, health, education, mental health, and social service concerns to appropriate staff.
Works with the appropriate content specialist to assure planning and follow-through regarding educational or social issues.
Supervises work of classroom staff and volunteers.
Plans and conducts required parent meetings and updates parents on program-related events.
Provides leadership and parenting training to parents.
Serves as the liaison/advocate between parent, school, and community resources.
Observes and follows the Child Abuse and Prevention policy of Head Start as a mandated reporter.
Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment, and submits requisition needs to Center Supervisor or designee.
Assures election and attendance of one or two parents and up to two alternates to the Head Start Parent Policy Council.
Works with the Parent Policy Council representatives to provide opportunities for regular feedback to the parent group meeting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge and understanding of the developmental levels of preschool-aged children.
Knowledge in the motivational techniques used in total child development.
Skill in the use of modern office equipment such as the telephone, calculator, copier, personal computer or terminal, and related peripherals.
Ability to teach, supervise, and relate to preschool-aged children, both individually and in groups.
Ability to establish control and provide proper discipline when necessary.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to instruct and teach others the skills and practices of childhood learning.
Ability to carry out supplementary responsibilities related to the children's program.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Associate's degree in child development or early childhood education.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Associate's degree in any field or a current City-Parish Teacher Aide with approval from the Office of Head Start (OHS) temporarily waiving the educational requirements for the Teacher or Teacher (9.5 Months) Classifications for up to two years.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS

OTHER JOB ASPECTS
Employees hired in this class with an associate's degree in any field must obtain a BESE approved Early Childhood Education Ancillary Certification and complete the nine hours in Early Childhood Education course work within two years from the initial employment date or the employee will be terminated. Current City-Parish Teacher Aide Employees hired in this class must successfully obtain an Early Childhood Education Associate's degree, which encompasses the completion of nine hours of course work in early childhood education or childhood development within two years from the initial employment date or the employee will be terminated. The probationary period for employees hired in this classification will end after the employee has completed six (6) months of employment and all educational requirements. Must be able to bend, stoop and lift 50 pounds. This position requires computer software skills.
