GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of a higher classification, performs highly specialized skilled work in bridge rehabilitation, tree trimming or concrete finishing. Employees of this class are also responsible for operating all types of construction equipment properly. Hazardous conditions are often encountered when employees are required to work at considerable heights and around power lines while operating power saws. Some positions in this classification may be on 24-hour call out for emergency situations. Work is assigned orally and in writing and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion. Minor supervision may be exercised over a small crew of workers as assigned. Performs other work as requested.
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Operates on a regular basis one or more pieces of a variety of light and medium automotive equipment as listed on the Official City-Parish Equipment List.
Performs various activities associated with bridge rehabilitation, concrete finishing or tree trimming; serves as lead worker over a small crew as assigned.
Repairs and maintains bridges throughout the parish; replaces and repairs piles; ties re-enforcing steel; replaces and repairs guardrails; reinforces and backfills areas around bridges.
Removes and replaces caps, braces, wall plugs, sills and other bridge members.
Operates a truck-mounted hydraulic platform boom used in trimming and removing trees; operates various tools and equipment peculiar to tree trimming.
Climbs trees using ladders, ropes, saddles, and safety belts; prunes trees using various types of pruning equipment.
Performs skilled masonry work building forms for curbs, driveways, sidewalks and streets; pours and finishes concrete surfaces using a trowel, level, float and other concrete finishing tools.
Removes forms after concrete is set and dried, without damaging repairs; backfills areas that are dugout due to formation of concrete.
Maintains equipment by washing and cleaning, changing belts, hoses, oil and oil filters, and performing any other minor repairs.
Performs various maintenance activities in and around City-Parish maintenance buildings and lots.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of bridge rehabilitation, concrete finishing, or tree trimming.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing specialized construction and maintenance equipment.
Knowledge of the trades and general municipal maintenance, construction and labor tools, equipment and practices.
Knowledge of applicable traffic laws and regulations governing automotive equipment operations.
Knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operation.
Skill in the operation of assigned equipment.
Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment used in general maintenance, construction, repair work, bridge rehabilitation, concrete finishing, and/or tree trimming.
Ability to detect needed repairs and to make necessary operation adjustments.
Ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of a small crew of workers.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions and to work from sketches and plans.
Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous manual work under varying weather conditions.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read and write, one year of experience in operating a variety of light automotive equipment, and one year of experience in bridge rehabilitation, tree trimming, or concrete finishing work.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.) Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license or a valid Louisiana Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A, B, or C with appropriate endorsements. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position. Tree Trimming Positions: Attainment of a Louisiana State Utility Arborist's license within six (6) months of date of appointment.
